The heat hit me like a warm blanket as I stepped out of the terminal. It was 32 degrees Celsius, and the humidity was high. I walked through the airport feeling nervous but excited. I was there to meet Rina. We had been talking for 6 months. I was looking through the profiles at https://asian-mail-order-brides.chicagoweddingminister.us/indones....es.html when I first saw her smile. Her bio mentioned she loved old movies and spicy food. Jakarta is a busy city with 10 million people. The traffic is slow, but the energy is high. I saw 100 motorcycles pass me in just 2 minutes. Meeting at the Cafe We met at a small cafe near the National Monument. Rina wore a bright yellow dress. She looked even better than her photos. We talked about her family in Bandung and the 3 siblings she has. We used the translation help a few times when my English got too fast for her. She has a soft voice that makes you want to listen closely. We shared a plate of fried bananas and watched the people walk by in the sun. It is funny how a simple photo of a pet can change everything between two people. We were showing each other photos on our phones. I showed her a picture of my cat, Barnaby. He is a Persian cat with a permanent scowl. Rina gasped and laughed. She showed me a photo of her cat, Mochi. Mochi had the exact same flat face and grumpy eyes. We spent 20 minutes just comparing their angry expressions. It felt like the distance between us disappeared right then. We were just two people who liked weird cats. Exploring Together We spent the next 5 days traveling. We went to the Old Town and saw the Dutch colonial buildings. The white walls were peeling, but they looked beautiful in the afternoon light. We ate satay at a street stall. The peanut sauce was thick and sweet. I tried 4 different types of sambal. Some were very hot, but Rina just laughed as I drank 2 bottles of water. Why This Culture Is Unique I noticed a few things during our walks. People are very polite. They smile even when they are stuck in traffic for 2 hours. Rina explained that family comes first in her culture. She spends every Sunday with her parents. FeatureMy ExperienceFoodSpicy and rich with coconutPeopleVery patient and kindWeatherAlways humid and warm We visited the Istiqlal Mosque which is huge. We walked through the textile market for 3 hours. We watched the sunset at Ancol beach at 6:00 PM. Rina used the filters on her side to find someone who liked animals. I am glad she did. Her profile was so detailed. It listed her hobbies like traditional dancing and cooking. We talked about how Mochi and Barnaby would probably hate each other but we would love them anyway. The Quiet Moments The sky turned a deep orange as we watched the boats. I realized that finding someone from another country is about the small things. It is about sharing a laugh over a grumpy cat. It is about trying new food and not knowing what it is. We did not need big words. We just needed to be there. The humidity did not matter anymore. The noise of the city faded away. I felt a sense of peace I had not felt in years. I am already planning my next trip back in 3 months. It is a long flight, but it is worth every minute of the 14 hours I spent on the plane. The world is big, but it can feel very small when you find the right person to talk to. I hope to see the tea plantations with her next time. It is nice to know someone is waiting for me. | | | | |
